With over 1 million annual attendees and a rich 120-year history, the New York International Auto Show ranks as one of the top events on the automotive industry’s calendar.

With the rise of clean energy — and electric cars becoming a priority for brands worldwide — this was essential to reflect in the show’s branding. After two cancelled years of shows due to COVID-19, the client felt passionate about having this design reflect hope for the future. Working with a bold and colorful car against a dynamic and gritty road, I brought brightness to the branding and a feeling of openness to the event space. “The Future is Bright” slogan brought this message home. Every part of the design process revolved around this idea. This slogan is not only seen throughout the banners — highlighted and in big block letters — but also through thematic design choices, such as the bold colors and light streaks. Incorporating a bright electric blue that fades towards teal, I referenced the movement towards carbon zero and electric vehicles in the industry. The addition of contrasted pops of red, orange, yellow, and purple color streaks play off of futuristic renderings of speed, space, and time — to visually bring the show into the future. The typeface also enhances the futuristic theme, a modern style that pays homage to computer typefaces of years’ past.

These themes of clean energy and moving towards the future are also reflected in the 2023 show’s poster. Using a rich black background allows the bright neon arrows to stand out, pointing forward to suggest positive movement. The tagline “Be Amazed” reinforces this idea — for show-goers to marvel at the future of cars and automotive technology being exhibited. The cropped car in the front grounds the design and gives context for the casual viewer. Big, bold, colorful type plays off the neon colors to create a cohesive image.
